Course Descriptions
Private Lessons
Students will receive daily private lessons with our faculty. Lessons focus on preparation of all music including solos, chamber music, and string orchestra parts.
Master Class/Performance Class
Each week students will have the opportunity to perform chamber music and solos for each other and receive faculty comments in a collaborative and encouraging environment. Regular performance classes are an essential tool in preparation for the SSMA final concert.
String Orchestra
Ensemble techniques focusing on communication in a large group are emphasized in this orchestral session. The string orchestra performs during the SSMA final concert.
Chamber Music
Students are placed in small groups of various sizes where they rehearse and receive regular coaching. Chamber music groups perform during the SSMA final concert.
Technique Class
This daily group class focuses on essential technical details in string and piano playing. Basic aspects of posture and bow-hold (for strings) are combined with advanced issues concerning the physicality of playing (i.e., body awareness, tension, and relaxation).
Music History/Theory
Composers, styles, genres, and major repertoire throughout all of music history are discussed in this course. Included are lectures, individual research, and group discussions.
Historical Performance Workshop
This workshop will introduce students to the interpretation of music based on historical information from a given time period. Focusing on the Baroque, students will experiment with Baroque bows, play with harpsichord accompaniment, learn basic principles of improvisations, and how to read figured bass symbols.
Suzuki/Early Piano Mentorship
In partnership with our Suzuki and Early Piano program, interested students can be paired with a younger student for portions of the camp. Academy students will be assigned to practice with the early learner and also observe their daily routine.
